About HEKATE
Autonomy and integrity were central to the idea of establishing Hekate Publishing. The healthy development of this company as both a personal mythological mission and as an ethical business depends on being able to maintain these two important factors. With this in mind, we want to work with writers in a mutually beneficial way rather than the traditionally accepted master/slave dynamic.
We decided we wanted to work with writers who are trying to maintain their autonomy as much as is humanly possible in the present age. And, of course, the mavericks...those who want to self-publish and yet never stepped foot inside a creative writing classroom.
Hekate will endeavor to get unseen writing out there but is faced with the usual challenges. “We” try to proceed through each manuscript in order received. Practically, this is not possible. The books are not all the same. The expectations of the authors are not all the same. Hekate does not work linearly, the usual expectation. Each piece, depending on its inherent challenges, gets done though opportunistic scheduling. The publisher, and therefore the publishing entity, subsist on bitcoin hash rates, access to coffee, as well as being modulated by the neurotransmitter having an upper hand during any given week. Wary of snake oil salesmen, we are not a vanity press and will not do the work for you. Hekate is not an “easy” publisher and remains suitable for a minority of artists.
As time goes on, Hekate will invest more in marketing. For now, “it is what it is,” dependent on other sources of income, not books. We are starting with one employee. That one employee, having worked forty years for hourly wages, has come to believe you have to buy your freedom. Hekate also represents something along those lines, psychically more than financially at this point. So that’s where we stand, holding on to the black swan for dear life.
